CertainTeed Radiant Barrier Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
We stock and install CertainTeed-compatible radiant barrier in Houston, with most installations running between $1,850 and $3,400 depending on attic size (for a 1,500 – 2,500 sq ft attic, $0.90 – $1.40 per sq ft installed). Same-day installation is available when material is on the truck, which it usually is. Most Houston homeowners discover their radiant barrier has failed the hard way: the upstairs bedroom gets noticeably hotter than the downstairs in July, or the A/C runs longer while the thermostat stays put. Sometimes it’s visible from the attic hatch, where sheets have torn loose from the rafters and are drooping over the insulation below, doing nothing.
Which CertainTeed Models This Applies To
CertainTeed’s MemBrain and CertaShield lines are the two radiant barrier products we install most often in Houston homes. The key gotcha most owners run into when trying to match a replacement sheet is the perforation pattern. CertainTeed’s radiant barrier comes in both perforated and non-perforated versions, and in a Houston attic with any degree of humidity, perforated is the only correct choice. Perforated sheets allow water vapor to pass through, which matters when your attic reaches 90% humidity in August. Non-perforated barrier traps moisture against the roof deck, and over a few Texas summers, that turns into warped sheathing and mold. If you cannot read the printed label on the existing sheet, look for the small pinhole perforations spaced every inch across the surface. If they are not there, the original installer used the wrong product for our climate, and a full replacement is the fix, not a patch job. We are an independent Houston insulation contractor, not affiliated with CertainTeed, so our honest recommendation is based on what works in this humidity, not on what one brand pushes.
Signs Your CertainTeed Radiant Barrier Installation Is Failing
- Staple pull-through along rafter lines. Houston’s heat-cycling makes staples work themselves loose over 8 to 12 years. You will see sheets hanging in U shapes between rafters instead of spanning flat. The barrier is still reflective but is now touching the insulation below, which kills its function.
- Upstairs rooms run 8 to 12 degrees hotter than downstairs on sunny afternoons. This is the classic Houston symptom. A working radiant barrier keeps attic temperature down to 110 – 120°F in August. A failed one lets that climb to 140°F or more, and that heat pushes through the upstairs ceiling.
- Tears around roof penetrations. Around attic hatches, plumbing vents, and can lights, the foil gets pulled during other attic work. Once a sheet tears more than a few inches, it ceases to hold tension and the tear spreads. We see this in nearly every Houston attic over 10 years old.
- Dust-darkened surface. Radiant barrier works by reflecting. When Houston dust coats the shiny foil surface to the point where you can no longer see a reflection, it loses most of its emissivity benefit. This is common in homes near construction or with older, leaky roof decks.
- Animal damage in the attic. Squirrels and rats chew through foil. Rats in particular like nesting in the gap between the barrier and the roof deck. Once there is a colony up there, the barrier gets shredded in weeks, not years.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, full CertainTeed-compatible radiant barrier replacement for a typical 1,800 sq ft attic runs $1,900 to $2,700 installed. That includes removal of the failed sheets, haul-away, new CertainTeed MemBrain perforated barrier stapled to the underside of the rafters, and a walk-through with photo documentation. Smaller townhome attics land closer to $1,400. Large 3,000+ sq ft attics in older homes near Hermann Park run $3,200 and up. Our written estimate is specific, not a range. You will know the exact number before any work starts, and every installation carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it is not right, we come back and make it right, no fine print and no back-and-forth.
DIY or Call Us?
Radiant barrier in a Houston attic is hot, cramped, and physically awkward but not dangerous in the way high-tension springs are. That said, an attic that hits 140°F in August can cause heat exhaustion within 30 minutes. If you want to diagnose the issue yourself, grab a flashlight and check from the attic hatch: are sheets hanging loose, torn, or dust-covered? That is safe. But the installation itself requires kneeling on joists for hours, cutting foil around roof penetrations with a utility knife (hands over your head, the whole time), and stapling hundreds of times. The tool cost for a one-time job approaches the cost of a labor-only install, and a badly hung sheet is the same as no sheet. Neil Barron walked a home in the Heights last June where the homeowner had hung half a roll himself to save money, and the unsupported edges were already sagging onto the insulation after three months. He looked at it, pointed at the sag, and said what he always says: “Tell me what’s in the room on the other side of that wall, and I’ll tell you exactly what goes between it.” The fix was a full re-hang, done before the afternoon heat hit 95. FAQs
In Houston’s humidity and heat, a properly installed perforated CertainTeed radiant barrier typically lasts 15 to 20 years before dust accumulation and staple fatigue make replacement worthwhile. Non-perforated barrier fails through moisture entrapment in 8 to 12 years, which is why we only install perforated in this climate. Call (430) 226-1334 for an exact quote, your estimate is free.
A single torn section can be patched by overlapping new foil by 3 inches on all sides and re-stapling. But in most Houston attics we inspect, 50% or more of the sheets show failure once dust and sag are accounted for. At that point, replacement is cheaper per square foot than repair. Give us a call at (430) 226-1334 and we will tell you honestly which side of that line you are on.
A typical 1,800 sq ft attic takes our crew one full day, roughly 6 to 8 hours, including removal of the old barrier and clean-up. Larger homes take up to two days. We schedule around your family’s quiet hours, use quiet tools when children are sleeping, and leave the hallway floors as clean as we found them.
Yes. We keep CertainTeed MemBrain perforated barrier and Reflectix radiant barrier rolls on our Houston trucks, so most jobs are quote-today, install-same-week, and often same-day when the job is small. Call (430) 226-1334 to confirm availability for your project, a live person answers every call, 24/7.
