Knauf Radiant Barrier Installation: The Houston Owner’s Guide
If you have a Knauf radiant barrier product that’s sagging, torn, or was never installed correctly in the first place, we stock Knauf-compatible radiant barrier materials on our trucks and can typically complete a standard Houston attic installation in one day. Most radiant barrier installation projects in Houston run between $1,400 and $3,200 depending on attic size, roof pitch, and whether you’re adding it during a re-insulation or as a standalone upgrade. You’ll notice the problem when your upstairs rooms stay hot well into the evening, or when you climb into the attic and see foil drooping between the rafters instead of lying smooth and taut against the roofline.
We’re an independent Houston insulation company, not affiliated with Knauf, but we install Knauf products regularly because they hold up in our climate. Eight brand lines live on our trucks, and Knauf is one we trust for radiant barrier work.
Which Knauf Models This Applies To
Knauf makes radiant barrier foil in a few configurations, and the installation approach depends on which one you have. The two most common in Houston attics are single-sided foil (foil on one face, kraft or poly on the back) and double-sided foil (reflective on both faces). Single-sided typically gets stapled foil-side-down between rafters when there’s an air gap below; double-sided gets draped over rafters before decking goes on, or stapled between them with air gaps on both sides.
Here’s what trips people up: Knauf’s foil-facing radiant barrier is not the same as their insulation batts. The radiant barrier is a separate product line, often sold as Knauf Insulation Radiant Barrier Foil or similar, and it does not have an R-value on its own. It reflects radiant heat. If someone installed a batt and told you it’s a radiant barrier, that’s a mismatch. When we quote a job, Neil Barron walks the attic twice before writing a number, and part of that second walk is checking exactly which Knauf product is up there and whether it was ever installed with the right air gap. Without an air gap on at least one side of the foil, the reflective surface doesn’t do its job.
For older Knauf foil that has separated from its backing or torn at the staple points, we typically recommend a full replacement with a double-sided product rather than a patch. Patching reflective foil creates seams that leak heat, and in a Houston August, heat finds every seam.
Signs Your Knauf Radiant Barrier Installation Is Failing
- Upstairs rooms won’t cool below 80°F in late afternoon. The radiant barrier’s job is to keep solar heat from baking through the roof deck into the attic. When it’s sagging or torn, that heat radiates straight down into your ceiling and the room below.
- Foil is visibly drooping or has pulled away from the rafters. This usually means the staples were spaced too far apart, or the installer used a lightweight hammer tacker that doesn’t bite deep enough in Houston humidity-softened roof decking.
- Tears along the bottom edge or near plumbing vents and roof penetrations. These are the high-traffic spots. Any time an electrician or plumber works in the attic, the foil near their entry point takes damage. We see torn foil around bathroom exhaust fans constantly, because contractors step over it.
- Dust film on the foil’s shiny surface. A layer of dust cuts reflectivity dramatically. If your foil face is dull instead of shiny, it’s reflecting maybe half of what it should.
- Rust or water staining along the top edge. In older Houston homes, roof leaks leave mineral streaks on the foil. Even after the roof is fixed, the stained section won’t reflect properly and should be replaced.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In Houston, expect to pay roughly $1,400 to $2,400 for a typical single-story ranch with 1,200 to 1,800 square feet of attic floor space. Two-story homes with steeper roof pitches and more rafter area run $2,200 to $3,200. Homes in older neighborhoods like the Heights or Montrose with complex roof lines and multiple gables will fall toward the higher end because there’s more cutting and stapling.
| Scope | Houston Installed Price |
|---|---|
| Single-story, ≤1,200 sq ft attic floor | $1,400 – $1,900 |
| Single-story, 1,200 – 1,800 sq ft attic floor | $1,700 – $2,400 |
| Two-story or steep pitch, any size | $2,200 – $3,200 |
| Re-insulation plus radiant barrier, same job | Add $1,800 – $4,500 depending on insulation type |
Every quote includes removal and disposal of failed Knauf foil, new Knauf double-sided radiant barrier, staples and adhesive tabs rated for Houston’s temperature swings, and a full clean-up. We lay drop cloths across your hallway and wear shoe covers from the front door to the attic hatch. Before the van leaves, you get a photo of the finished attic and the clean-up. And you’ll have your exact written number before anyone touches a rafter.
DIY or Call Us?
Radiant barrier installation isn’t in the same danger class as garage-door springs or wiring, but working in a Houston attic in summer is genuinely unsafe for someone without the right gear and timing. Attic temperatures exceed 130°F between June and September, and heat exhaustion hits fast. The work itself is physically awkward: you’re stapling overhead, balancing on joists, and sharp foil edges will slice your forearms. That said, if it’s November or February and you’re set on doing it yourself, the one thing you can safely check is whether your existing foil has an air gap. Bring a flashlight and a phone camera, take photos of the label, and compare what you see against Knauf’s installation specs. What goes wrong for DIYers in Houston is almost always the air gap. It gets installed flush against the roof deck with no gap, and the homeowner has spent a weekend putting up foil that does almost nothing.
For most Houston families, the honest math is: one of our crews finishes in a day, the price is in writing before we start, and a 365-Day Done Right Promise backs the work. FAQs
Knauf’s radiant barrier foil typically lasts 15 to 25 years in Houston, though the first thing to fail is usually the staples, not the foil itself. Humidity swings make roof decking expand and contract, and staples pull loose over time. If your foil has been up for more than a decade and you notice sagging, it’s worth having someone look at it. Call (430) 226-1334 and we’ll send a technician to check it before the next heat wave.
You can repair small tears and re-staple loose sections, but we generally don’t recommend patching anything larger than a few square feet. Reflective foil works because it’s continuous; every seam is a leak point. For a sagging section that spans multiple rafters, replacement of that section is the honest fix, and we price it that way rather than charging for a full attic redo when you don’t need one. The written quote spells out exactly what is repaired versus replaced, so you know what you’re paying for.
A standard single-story Houston attic takes one day for a two-person crew. Add a half-day if you’re combining it with re-insulation and we need to remove old batts or blow in new insulation first. We start early in warm months and use quiet tools where we can, so the work doesn’t echo through the house the whole day.
We stock Knauf double-sided radiant barrier foil in the most common roll widths on our trucks, so most jobs don’t require a return visit. If your attic has an unusual rafter spacing, we bring the right width on day one and it’s covered in the written price. We also stock Reflectix for areas where a thinner, lighter product makes more sense, like around specific vent chutes.
